Course Objectives:
This course focuses on high-risk interactions common in Northern Alberta. Workers will learn to manage bear encounters in camps, identify territory markers, and use bear spray effectively in diverse weather conditions typical of the Oil Sands region.
Core Curriculum:
- Oil Sands Ecology: Specific behaviors of bears around camps, tailings ponds, and active heavy haul roads.
- Camp Safety: Waste management protocols and “Clean Camp” policies to prevent attracting wildlife.
- Bear Spray Mastery: Drills on deploying spray while wearing winter gloves or heavy PPE.
- Attack Survival: Reactionary gap training and survival techniques for maulings (defensive vs. predatory).
Training Details:
- Location: 3001 Snow Eagle Drive, Fort McMurray, AB.
- Duration: Approximately 4 hours (Theory + Practical).
- Certification: Valid for 3 years. Accepted by major site operators.
- On-Site Options: We can deploy instructors to your site or camp (Firebag, Kearl, etc.) for group training.
