Telehandler Training – Fort McMurray

Operating heavy machinery in the Wood Buffalo region demands rigorous adherence to safety protocols and an advanced understanding of your equipment. WestPro’s Fort McMurray Telehandler Operator Certification (often referred to as Zoom Boom training) equips workers with the critical expertise needed to safely maneuver telescopic handlers across demanding oil sands projects, heavy industrial yards, and complex construction sites. Our program guarantees you meet all current Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) competency requirements.

What to Expect:

Delivered by seasoned industry professionals, our Fort McMurray training combines in-depth classroom theory with hands-on, practical machine operation. Variable reach forklifts (telehandlers) operate differently than standard lift trucks, primarily due to shifting centers of gravity. We train operators to instinctively understand boom extension limits, interpret complex load charts, and proactively identify job site hazards to eliminate the risk of equipment tip-overs.

What You Will Learn:

  • Industrial Safety Awareness: Identifying site-specific hazards, understanding ground conditions, and executing proper emergency response procedures.
  • Equipment Familiarization: A thorough breakdown of the telehandler’s anatomy, including steering modes, telescopic boom mechanics, and control panel operations.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conducting rigorous pre-operational walk-arounds and visual inspections to catch defects before they cause downtime.
  • Operational Excellence: Mastering safe load lifting, carrying, and placement at extreme heights, while maintaining the machine’s stability triangle.

Training Details:

  • Location: 3001 Snow Eagle Drive, Fort McMurray, AB T9H 0J4.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why do I need specific training for a zoom boom if I already have a forklift ticket?
A: Standard forklifts lift vertically, whereas a telehandler’s boom extends out and up. This drastically alters the machine’s center of gravity and stability. Specific training on load charts and boom mechanics is a legal requirement to safely operate this machinery.

Q: Where exactly are the practical evaluations held?
A: Both the classroom instruction and the practical machine evaluations are conducted at our dedicated WestPro facility in Fort McMurray, located at 3001 Snow Eagle Drive.

Q: What if I forget my personal protective equipment (PPE)?
A: For safety and compliance reasons, all students must bring their own required PPE (6″ safety boots, hard hat, gloves, glasses, and hi-vis vest) to participate in the practical evaluation.

Q: How do I substitute another worker if I cannot attend?
A: If you are unable to make your scheduled class but want to send a qualified substitute from your company, simply contact our office prior to the course start time.
