Course Overview:
Operating in the oil sands presents unique challenges, from frozen ground conditions to congested plant sites. Our training emphasizes the “Safety First” culture, teaching operators not just how to drive, but how to work safely around other heavy equipment and personnel.
What You Will Learn:
- Hazard Recognition: Identifying blind spots, pinch points, and swing hazards in an industrial setting.
- Control Mastery: Transitioning smoothly between the steering wheel of a loader and the joystick/pedals of a skid steer.
- Attachment Safety: Changing buckets, forks, and sweepers without injury.
- Cold Weather Ops: Best practices for machine warm-up and operation in Northern Alberta winters.
Training Details:
- Location: 3001 Snow Eagle Drive, Fort McMurray, AB.
- One Day Duration: Experienced operators – Approximately 8 hours (includes practical component).
- Two Day Duration: New operators – Approximately 6 hours each day (includes practical component).
- Certification: Upon successful completion (80% minimum on both theory and practical components), you’ll receive a certificate.
- Re-certification: Required every three years.
- Prerequisites: All students must bring valid government-issued identification.
- PPE Required: 6″ safety boots, safety gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, and hi-vis vests.
- Cancellations: 24-hour notice is required. Late arrivals or no-shows will forfeit the full course fee. Qualified substitutions are permitted up to the course start date.

A: Yes. We specialize in on-site training. We can send an instructor to your location to train your team on your own loaders and skid steers, minimizing downtime.

A: Yes. WestPro’s training meets the industry standard for OHS competency. However, always check if your specific site requires an additional internal practical evaluation.
Q: What PPE is required?
A: Full PPE is mandatory: CSA-approved 6″ safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and a high-visibility vest.
