Course Overview:
While these are smaller machines, the risks in an industrial environment are huge. Our training focuses on operating safely around heavy traffic, understanding the limitations of the equipment on frozen or uneven ground, and strictly adhering to the site safety culture of the Wood Buffalo region.
Key Course Modules:
- Confined Maneuvering: operating safely in tight camp pathways or crowded shops.
- Load Physics: How the centre of gravity shifts when carrying different materials.
- Attachments: Safely changing and using skid steer buckets, forks, and sweepers.
- Cold Weather Care: Specific inspection protocols for operating hydraulics in extreme cold.
Training Details:
- Location: 3001 Snow Eagle Drive, Fort McMurray, AB.
- Two Day Duration: New & Experienced operators – Approximately 6 hours each day (includes practical component).
- Certification: Upon successful completion (80% minimum on both theory and practical components), you’ll receive a certificate.
- Re-certification: Required every three years.
- Prerequisites: All students must bring valid government-issued identification.
- PPE Required: 6″ safety boots, safety gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, and hi-vis vests.
- Cancellations: 24-hour notice is required. Late arrivals or no-shows will forfeit the full course fee. Qualified substitutions are permitted up to the course start date.

A: While not required to pass the course, a valid Class 5 driver’s license is almost always required by employers to operate this equipment on active oil sands sites.

Q: What PPE is required for the practical?
