Course Overview:
We move beyond basic “bear safety” to cover the full spectrum of wildlife encounters common in the North Saskatchewan River Valley and surrounding industrial parks. By the end of this session, city crews, surveyors, and field staff will know how to deter wildlife and deploy bear spray effectively under stress.
Core Curriculum:
- Urban vs. Wild: Understanding habituated wildlife behavior in the Capital Region versus remote wilderness.
- Species Identification: Distinguishing between Black Bears, Grizzlies, Cougars, and Coyotes common in Central Alberta.
- Deterrents: Practical handling of bear spray, noise deterrents, and site management to remove attractants.
- Response Strategy: De-escalation techniques for defensive vs. predatory encounters.
Training Details:
- Location: 20204 110 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB (Easy access from Anthony Henday & Yellowhead Trail).
- Duration: Approximately 4 hours (includes inert bear spray practice).
- Certification: Valid for 3 years upon successful completion (80% pass mark).
- Prerequisites: Valid government-issued ID.
- PPE: Closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor practicals.
